Authorities in Greene County are still trying to figure out what started a deadly fire in East Durham Monday that killed five people.

Last night, the community came together for a vigil at Our Lady of Knock Shrine Church to remember members of the Mammano family.

Three children between the ages of 7 and 12 and their grandparents died in the fire.

The fast-moving fire trapped the victims inside the home.

The children's father, identified in a GoFundMe Page post as John Mammano, remains in critical condition.

"You turn on the television you see tragedy unfortunately all the time all over the country in the world but when it's in your own backyard it really really it makes you cringe," said mourner Jerry Sheehan.

The Cairo-Durham Central School District released a statement this morning about the death of the children, saying in part “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of three Cairo-Durham CSD students this morning, along with their two grandparents.

The school district will offer counseling support to students and staff at Cairo-Durham Elementary School throughout the week as well as when students return from the recess period.”
