GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- In 1979, Dave Strader began his broadcasting career in Glens Falls, calling Adirondack Red Wings games. It was the start of a long career, with a voice now familiar to hockey fans around the world.

"It was really important that he was able to make it to the press box dedication a couple weeks ago," said Casey Strader, Dave's son. "That really meant a lot to him."

On Thursday, hundreds stopped by the arena where Strader got his start to say goodbye to the long time hockey broadcaster. Strader passed away Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

"For all the analysts and techs and crews that he worked with, he loves the game," said Chris Strader, another son. "He loved working with people and that just really brought him great joy."

Known as 'The Voice,' Strader went on to call NHL games for the Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Arizona Coyotes, NBC Sports, and most recently the Dallas Stars. He has also broadcast Stanley Cup playoff games and the Winter Olympics.

Since the news of his death, there have been a lot of tributes around the NHL and broadcasting world honoring Strader. It's something that his family says means the world to them.

"To have friends, family, co-workers, everyone he knew during his life to come through here today, would definitely put a smile on his face," Casey Strader said.
