ROTTERDAM, N.Y. -- Police say they have found the body of a man who drowned in the Mohawk River Saturday night.

Police say 43-year-old Gewandatt Ramjit was fishing with friends after 7 p.m. Saturday night.

They say he decided to swim near Lock 8, and never resurfaced.

Officials say he was found in about 7 feet of water around Sunday morning.

Emergency crews began their search Saturday night both on the ground, as well as a state police helicopter.

"We have no other new information as far as the cause we just think he went swimming, kind of swam farther than his abilities and then went under," said Glenville Police Department Lieutenant Rick Conley.

Officials believe the cause of death was drowning but will not know for sure until an autopsy is completed.
