Student proficiency on the English language arts and math exams increased slightly this year. Tuesday, the State Education Department released test results for grades three through eight. Statewide, 39.9 percent of students were considered proficient on the ELA test, up just under two percent from last year. On math, 40.2 percent were proficient, which is up a little more than one percent from last year. But in the Big Five school districts, results were a bit more mixed. State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia joins us to break down the numbers.
