State police remained at a County Route 2 home in Putnam on Friday, where police say 16-year-old Adrian Sawyer killed 15-year-old Maverick Bowman just one day earlier.

Washington County District Attorney Tony Jordan says police went to the home after being notified by Sawyer's family. According to Jordan, Sawyer made some comments which alarmed his relatives. When police arrived at the home, they discovered Bowman's body.

"That's what really started the beginning of the real part of the investigation," Jordan said.

Jordan says Bowman was fatally stabbed in the neck. He also says Sawyer tried to set the house on fire.

Sawyer has been charged with second degree murder and second degree arson.

Investigators are still looking into the relationship between the two teens. Jordan says the two knew each other.

Ticonderoga School District confirmed both teens were students there. As for a motive, Jordan says they're still trying to determine that.

"We certainly have our theories," Jordan said. "There has been some stuff that we've been able to glean, but at this point, we don't know."

Sawyer is being held at the county jail without bail. He's due in Putnam town court next month. However, a grand jury could be hearing the case before the next court appearance.
