A hair stylist in Scotia has a bright future. The entrepreneur, known for giving clients rainbow dyed mermaid hair, is expanding her operation.

From the tattoos on her arm, to the rainbow she wears, Jordan Glindmyer is all about color.

“I am surrounded by it every day. I enjoy it. It makes me happy,” Glindmyer said.

The owner of Pinup Jordan's Mermaid Lounge in Scotia is known for her vivid, rainbow-dyed creations known as mermaid hair. It’s a term, now widely used in salons, that Jordan says she and a client coined.

The dye process can take up to eight hours. For clients like Shawnna Price, it’s the ultimate form of self-expression.

“If I could rip my heart open it would just be full of bubbles and rainbows and, I think, I just feel on top of the world” Price said.

Its reactions like this that push Glindmyer through 60 hour work weeks, and pulled her away from a possible career as a prosecutor. She studied criminal justice at St. Rose and dreamed of being a district attorney.

“I just decided that field wasn’t really for me,” Glindmyer said.

The Schenectady native went to the Paul Mitchell beauty school, graduated in 2011, then opened her one business a year later. In 2015, the Mermaid Lounge moved to its current location in Scotia.

“She is creative but she plays on your skin tone, your personality, and makes you feel really spectacular,” said longtime client Egan Sacca.

In the spring, Glindmyer is returning to her roots to grow her business.

“We’re going to move to 204 Lafayette Street in downtown Schenectady,” Glindmyer said.

The new salon will include suites for other small businesses.

“Everyone from graphic designers photographers, jewelry designers,” Glindmyer said.

It’s a bold move but this mermaid is ready to make a splash.

“I always say that mermaid hair is mindset not just a hair color,” Glindmyer said.
