Any computer user is vulnerable to cyber attacks at all times, but governments are even more so. The Center for Internet Security in Rennselaer County helps governments around the world avoid digital threats. Reporter Jon Dougherty brings you inside in this week's Capital Region Business Beat.

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. -- It looks like a mission control center, but the men and women in the large room in East Greenbush are protecting many from the next big digital threat.

"Attackers and hackers don't take time off and they're coming from all over the world," said Gina Chapman.

Chapman is the senior director of operations for the Center for Internet Security, a not-for-profit organization with one main purpose.

"Providing cyber security resources to state and local governments, U.S. territories and tribal nations," Chapman said.

With offices in East Greenbush and Arlington, Virginia, the Center for Internet Security has about 100 employees, who work around the clock.

"We have a 24 by 7 operations center. We also provide threat intelligence, advisories on vulnerabilities, and remediation assistance," said Chapman.

Chapman said there is rarely a slow moment as threats come in at all times of day and they must work fast.

"As soon as an attack is attempted, we notify them within 15 minutes so that they can remediate the computer or the server or the host, whatever the case may be," she said.

Chapman said it's CIS' job to correct any problem as soon as possible because as soon as a government is affected, your home computer could be next.

"We're doing the work that needs to be done and I think that the average home user is aware, to some extent, of the vulnerabilities and the need for security online, and on the Internet," Chapman added.

As long as Internet is around, so will the need for the experts at CIS.
