On Tuesday, February 23, it was announced that a grand jury declined to indict the police officers who handcuffed 41-year-old Daniel Prude, placed a mesh hood over his head, and pressed it into the pavement until he lost consciousness in Rochester, New York last March.

The Monroe County Coroner's Office ruled Prude’s death a homicide.

“While I know that the Prude family, the Rochester community, and communities across the country will rightfully be devastated, we have to respect this decision,” New York Attorney General Letitia James, said in a series of tweets. “The current laws on deadly force have created a system that utterly failed Mr. Prude and so many others before him.”

Prude’s death is one of many Americans who struggle with their mental and behavioral health who die during police interactions.

Over 30 percent of people with serious mental illness have their first interaction with the mental health care system through law enforcement, according to the Study in Blue and Grey by Canadian Mental Health Association.

But they’re 16 times more likely to killed by law officers, according to the Treatment Advocacy Center’s Overlooked in the Undercounted The Role of Mental Illness in Fatal Law Enforcement Encounters report.

Below are nine other people who struggled with mental health that died within the past year following interactions with police officers.
