The Williamsville East Varsity Girls Soccer Team is forfeiting the remainder of the 2019 season.
Team members and their parents were informed by school officials during a private meeting Monday evening.
A school spokesperson said the decision came after an internal investigation found more than half of the team’s players violated the district’s interscholastic athletic contract during an incident they say took place off school property and outside of school hours.
Violations to the agreement result in immediate suspension from practice and competition for five weeks.
The district spokesperson says with 13 of 21 varsity team members suspended from play and not enough junior varsity players ready to move up, the school cannot field a team for the remainder of the season.
The superintendent of the school district, Dr. Scott Martzloff, said they regret they had to take this action but the behavior of the team members forced them to do so.
The district says it will not comment any further due to student privacy regulations.
