Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw is recommending several county playgrounds be shut down after he says lead paint was discovered there.

Mychajliw says he came upon the peeling paint issue when his own child went to play on a playground. That prompted him to test five playgrounds for lead paint with over-the-counter kits.

County Executive Mark Poloncarz says most of the playground equipment in Erie County Parks is new and was purchased after 1978 — the year that lead based paints were banned.

Mychajliw says he also had tests done through an independent agency.

"We just received the results back this morning, in 12 of the pieces of county playground equipment they all tested positive for lead and according to HUD standards 11 of those 12 have very dangerous levels of lead,” Mychajliw, R, said.

“Our health department is coming out is doing the work with our parks department and if there's a piece that's bad it will be shut down. If it is safe it will be allowed to be used because we want everyone to enjoy the parks,” Poloncarz, D, said.

Poloncarz says that his staff is out and about making repairs within County Parks during inspections and as they are made aware of issues.
