BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo favorite is back in bloom. The Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival will be held at the Japanese Gardens in Delaware Park this weekend.
It all begins Thursday with a fundraiser at the Buffalo History Museum from 6-9 p.m. The weekend events start at 11 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Organizers say it's a rain-or-shine festival, with food trucks, vendors, an origami display, Japanese language opportunities, a bonsai display and live musicians.
This year's festival marks a decade of the Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival.
"The festival, when it started, it really was just an idea of 'look at all these cherry trees that are in bloom; where is everybody?' " said co-founder Paula Hinz. "The idea of bringing more people to the Japanese Garden to experience something that we had already. We thought of ourselves as cheerleaders. We're not the ones that care for the garden daily; that's Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, but as cheerleaders, we said 'let's look at the trees! Look at how beautiful!' And that's how it all started."
Hinz says it's important for people to remember not to touch or climb the trees or pick their blossoms.
