St. Bonaventure's men's lacrosse program has just 19 games under their belts, opening the doors before the 2019 season.

Despite the seeds of success on the field being freshly planted, off it, they're already seeing charitable contributions bloom.

What You Need To Know

  • Despite having a new program, the Bonnies lacrosse team is making large contributions off the field.

  • The team raised nearly $30,000 for cancer charities.

  • The team also participated in Lacrosse for Life, raising $14,000 for Boston Children's Hospital.

  • Now, the Bonnies look to continue that success next year.

"I think I set our initial goal of $5,000 and we blew it out of the water in 24 or 36 hours or something like that," said assistant coach Nico Capron.

Capron approached the Bonnies about doing a little more than just playing games. He asked his freshly picked squad to take part in the LAX Stache Madness last November.

"We ended up raising nearly $15,000 as a team for the first year ever. Doing it was incredible and I think we came in fourth of 88 teams," Capron said.

Others are reaping what Bona sowed, galvanizing a brand new squad faster than any final on the scoreboard.

"I think that was the driving force behind it was wanting to do good for people who weren't in as fortunate of a position as we are," said Capron.

Putting others first didn't end there.

On March 14, members of the team harvested their hair as part of Lacrosse for Life, where an anonymous donor gave $1,000 per shaved head.

The Bonnies contributed $14,000 to a total of over $2 million for the Boston Children's Hospital.

"It turned into a shearing mill in one of our hotel rooms on the road, so it was pretty cool for guys to come out and put up that money towards something bigger than themselves. I think that nurturing that compassion along with the school's values has been pretty cool," added Capron.

Just like anyone with a green thumb, Capron and the Bonnies hope these seeds continue to grow year after year.
