Playoff football is in the air in Section VI. This week's Spectrum High School Game of the Week will feature a Class A quarterfinal matchup as the second-seeded Grand Island Vikings host the seventh-seeded South Park Sparks.

Grand Island (6-1) enters Friday on a six-game winning streak. The Vikings lone loss on the season came at the hands of Starpoint, 35-14, in their season opener. Grand Island earned the two seed by finishing at the top of the Class A2 division standings.

The Vikings head into Friday trying to avoid a repeat of last year. Grand Island’s 2017 season ended abruptly in the first round of the Class A playoffs with a 28-14 loss to West Seneca East.

A loss on Friday would mark the end of the road for a number of Viking seniors, none more impressive than quarterback Cam Sionko. He has started games for Grand Island since his freshman year and intends to keep on playing deep into the fall.

“We've got a lot of momentum on our side, but I think Western New York hasn't seen what we've got in the bag and what we can pull out and what we can do,” said Sionko.

Unlike their counterparts, South Park (5-2) would love a repeat of the 2017 postseason, when the Sparks reached the Class A championship game before falling to West Seneca West 27-18. South Park enters Friday in a bit of a slump, having lost two of their final three regular season contests. Head Coach Tim Delaney wants to put that out of his mind and focus on, what he considers an entirely new season.

“You know, at this point it doesn't matter who is what seed or who's anything,” said Delaney.  “If you win, you stay playing. If you don't, you're done, so everyone is 0-0 at this point.”

The Sparks know the mindset needed to make a deep run and look to play on Friday with a certain brand of toughness.

The Vikings and Sparks kick off at 7:00 on Friday night. Catch all of the coverage exclusively on Spectrum News.
