A Buffalo Public Schools student took his own life last month after reportedly being severely bullied.
Now, his family is calling on the district to take action so future tragedies like this never happen again.
Dariel Rivera Reyes' family says multiple reports were made to the district related to the bullying, including reports by teachers. But they say not enough was done.
The family says BPS needs to be more proactive and take reports more seriously.
"The education department needs to go beyond posting 'no bullying' signs," said Dariel's grandmother. "It needs to do more for our children to prevent this from happening to another child, another family."
BPS Superintendent Tonja Williams says she is committed to taking action. She says would like to implement yearly reviews of district policies to ensure proper preventative measures are in place. She would also like to implement more training for teachers so students have more support.
"I want this to be ongoing beyond the bulletin boards, beyond the posters," Williams said. "It starts with policies, which is the role of our board, to review and develop policies because then we hold everybody accountable for making sure the system works the way it's supposed to work."
