WASHINGTON — As the world reels from President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff announcement and other dramatic moves to reshape the federal government, multiple groups plan to protest the changes in nationwide rallies Saturday.
In what they are calling a "Hands Off!" protest, the Human Rights Campaign, the AFL-CIO workers union, Planned Parenthood and other groups will lead a mobilization against the Trump administration’s policies in all 50 states.
“Donald Trump and Elon Musk think this country belongs to them,” the progressive anti-Trump group Indivisible wrote on its website. “We’re taking to the streets nationwide to fight back with a clear message: Hands off!”
In a statement, organizers said the mass demonstrations are intended to show “we do not consent to the destruction of our government and our economy for the benefit of Trump and his billionaire allies.”
On Saturday, Hands Off! rallies will take place in about 1,100 locations in all 50 states, according to the event’s organizers. They will be staged in various locations, including state capitals, congressional offices, federal buildings and on the National Mall in Washington.
The Hands Off! website said the Trump administration’s actions are “not just mismanagement. This is a hostile takeover.”
Since Trump took office, the U.S. DOGE Service run by special government employee, presidential adviser and billionaire Elon Musk has orchestrated mass layoffs at federal agencies and accessed multiple government data systems in the name of rooting out fraud, waste and abuse. The Trump administration has unwound operations of the U.S. Agency for International Development, imposed new rules for individuals to verify their identities for Social Security benefits and relocated the federal student loan program long overseen by the Education Department to the Small Business Administration, among many other changes.
Speakers at Saturday’s rally in the nation’s capital include multiple progressives from the Democratic Party, including Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla.; Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.; and Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., along with members and representatives of the AFL-CIO, the Human Rights Campaign, Indivisible, United We Dream, Win Without War and the Women’s March.
