A first-of-its-kind local law in New York state that will hold manufacturers responsible for disposing used solar panels has been drafted in Niagara County.

Legislator Dave Godfrey says under this law, solar panels would be recycled safely and in an environmentally friendly way.

The goal is to help minimize hazardous waste and recover valuable materials. In order for a manufacturer, distributor, retailer or installer to sell a solar panel within the county, it must follow the regulations in the local law.

Fees would be assessed for those not in compliance. Manufacturers would be required to submit plans for proper recycling of the panels and installation materials.

A public hearing will be held at 5:45 p.m. on June 15 at the Niagara County Courthouse.
