The Buffalo Police Advisory Board requested more oversight at the Common Council Police Oversight Committee meeting Tuesday night.

The board says it wants the ability to propose, approve, and reject changes within the department after a Buffalo police officer shot a man who was swinging a bat during a mental health crisis.

Buffalo police have begun a pilot program to use bolawrap, a non-lethal restraint that wraps around a suspect. Members of the advisory board say it should be up to them to review those decisions.

"Many community members have expressed the ways in which they are interacted with by police escalates crises and does not de-escalate, unfortunately,” said Buffalo Police Advisory Board Co-Chair Danielle Johnson. “The police advisory board believes that the priority should be finding ways to protect all individuals involved in verbal and non-violent de-escalation techniques."

The advisory board says it's working on recommendations to send to the Buffalo Police Department.
