A Buffalo native is vying for a United States Senate seat, but not in New York.

Democrat Trevor Fuller is running in North Carolina. The Nichols High School Class of 1985 graduate currently serves as a county commissioner in Mecklenburg County which includes the state’s largest city, Charlotte.

Even though he moved south to be closer to his fiancée’s family, Fuller said he still represents a lot of Western New York transplants. The candidate actually launched his bid more than a year ago, but Thursday evening he was back in Buffalo.

“Here in Buffalo, my hometown where I was born and I still have love for, we’re seeing some redevelopment happen and that’s really great,” he said. “But we also need to make sure people still who are struggling to make ends meet, that they have a chance to do that.”

Fuller said he was happy to be back in New York, but was still on the campaign trail. He said he’s trying to make things better for people across the country, not just North Carolina.

At an event at Flying Bison Brewery he took a photo with two of WNY’s top Democrats: Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.

“I’ve gotten to know Trevor in our capacities at national meetings. He is a great leader, running for U.S. Senate,” Poloncarz said.

Fuller is currently in a multi-candidate primary race for the party’s nomination. He said he hasn’t lost his Buffalo accent and still roots for the Bills.
