KINGSTON, N.Y. – Kingston Mayor Steve Noble this week announced plans for the removal of the Pike Plan canopies in Uptown Kingston, and the Common Council voted Wednesday in favor of a $1.2 million demolition project, expected to remove more than 40 canopies along Wall and North Front streets.
“In 2009, the canopies were in such disrepair that the city had received grant funds to basically completely remake, remodel and replace the canopies with what is currently there today," Noble said.
While some are in favor of the proposed construction, others oppose it.
Developer Neil Bender for William Gottlieb Real Estate is against the proposal. Despite his efforts to stop it, Noble said he is looking forward to an upcoming hearing.
“They currently will be having a hearing in couple of weeks to give us, hopefully, permission to be able to remove these structures," Noble said. "We are confident that we will succeed in this court battle.”
We reached out to William Gottlieb Real Estate for comment and are awaiting a response.
If the proposal is successful, Noble said the demolition will begin in April.
