WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester city leaders are working with the South Middlesex Opportunity Council on a request to keep the emergency homeless shelter at the former RMV open through June.
The 60-bed shelter started housing single adults experiencing homelessness in December. SMOC initially planned to staff the shelter through the end of April.
City Manager Eric Batista said the city is pleased with what the site has been able to accomplish in its first four months.
"They've been able to manage the clients that have come in and out of there really well,” Batista said. “We haven't had much issues from the businesses related to the shelter. They are looking to extend it to give them more opportunities to be able to house some of the individuals and connect them to the services they need, so they needed a little more of an extension and we're working through that."
Batista said the two sides are working out a final plan.
