Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced $479 million in grants for water infrastructure projects across New York state.

The grants include the first funding awarded through the Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act, which made $4.2 billion available for environmental projects after voters approved it in November 2022.

The governor’s office says the funding is projected to create 24,000 jobs across the state and save local ratepayers roughly $1.3 billion.

"No one in New York should ever fear that they don't have access to clean water," Hochul said in a statement. "We are reassuring communities across New York that your kids, grandkids, and great grandkids will always have access to clean and safe water. This investment will make lifesaving improvements to our water infrastructure and safeguard drinking water for millions of people, in addition to saving New Yorkers money and creating tens of thousands of jobs."

The grants include nearly $450 million awarded through New York state's Water Infrastructure Improvement and Intermunicipal Grant programs. The governor's office says an additional $30 million is being made available via the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Environmental Facilities Corporation to counties through the Septic System Replacement Program.
