BUFFALO, N.Y. — After a crash that killed four teenagers in a stolen vehicle, Buffalo Police are addressing an increase in car thefts.

Thefts of Kias specifically are up nearly 200% from last year, possibly because of thieves finding ways to break into Kias online.

Investigators say the car involved in last week’s deadly crash might have had something to do with the Kia Challenge, an online trend encouraging people to break into Kias.

Buffalo Police say they plan to launch an awareness campaign.

”We are going to send officers out again. They’ll be going out to convenience stores, gas stations, you name it,” BPD Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said. “In the parking lots, looking to identify people that leave their cars running and unattended, and we’ll be putting signs out at various locations using a data driven approach, looking to see were a high number of thefts are occurring in commercial areas.”

Kia says it’s working to distribute steering wheels locks to Kia owners in the area. It’s still not clear exactly how those locks will be given out.
