The Maui County Council’s Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee will consider a proposal from a temporary investigative committee to cap all transient accommodations on the island at its next meeting on Wednesday.

The proposal is part of an overall package of findings and recommendations from the Tourism Management and Economic Development temporary investigative group that the council will discuss at the meeting.

The TIG was established in response to negative impacts Maui residents have suffered due to “overtourism” and to a bill that established a temporary moratorium on new transient accommodations, according to committee and TIG chair Keani Rawlins-Fernandez.

The TIG also includes Council chair Alice Lee as vice-chair and Councilmembers Tamara Paltin and Shane Sinenci.

“During Wednesday’s committee meeting, I plan to have a complete discussion on the TIG’s final report, with the intention of transmitting the legislation to establish caps on transient accommodations to the planning commissions and advisory committees, which is the next step in the review process, before we can pass it into law,” Rawlins-Fernandez said.

If the proposal passes, it would trigger the expiration of the current moratorium.

Rawlins said the report’s recommendations are not intended to be exhaustive and only reflect specific priorities within the county’s jurisdiction.
