TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Environmental watchdogs are calling for an investigation into a fire at the former Tonawanda Coke site.

The Clean Air Coalition of Western New York says thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising from property and people in the area reported a noxious odor in the area, even after the fire was out.

The state DEC and environmental conservation officers responded to the scene assess any potential impact Tuesday night.

The Clean Air Coalition is asking the DEC to do a full investigation, to monitor the air quality in the surrounding neighborhoods and to audit the developer’s safety procedures.

The Tonawanda Coke Plant shut down in 2018 and is being cleaned up through state and federal programs.

The process is expected to last several more years.
