As people start to venture out more, the New York State Sheriffs' Association is pushing its Yellow Dot Program. It’s a free program, where a sticker alerts first responders to vital information stored in your home and car.

What You Need To Know

  • Yellow Dot Program is free through the NY Sheriffs' Association

  • It comes with a sticker and paperwork to fill out with all your medical information

  • You can request as many kits as you'd like

“You put the paperwork in the freezer,” said Dean Aschenbrenner, a Yellow Dot Program participant.

“And there’s a pair of them, because it has both of us. It has everything.”

Aschenbrenner is referring to the second half of the Yellow Dot Program. The first part is a sticker, which you place on the front of your home.

“This tells a first responder there are yellow copies in the freezer,” Aschenbrenner said.

It’s where you’re supposed to place papers that have all your medical information.

“Contact’s name and address, doctor’s name address, and we have added our health care proxy and power of attorney,” Aschenbrenner explained.

It’s to help first responders during what’s known as "the first golden hour" following a crash or medical emergency. The term implies that morbidity and mortality are affected if care is not given within that first hour.

“Our number one priority is the care of the patient, or occupants in the vehicle,” said Niagara County Sheriff's Department Capt. Robert Richards.

You can also put a yellow sticker in your rear driver's side window.

Richards says while having medical information is critical, knowing your name actually helps a lot, too.

“By having that information at our fingertips, we think brings a more stressful situation down to a less of one by creating that personal connection,” said Richards.

“It’s nice to know if something happens and you can’t speak, it’s right there,” Aschenbrenner said.

So far, more than 2 million New Yorkers have become part of the Yellow Dot Program.
