BUFFALO, N.Y. — Primary results for the Erie County sheriff has some up in arms and protesting Republican leadership.

A protest was held Wednesday evening outside the Erie County GOP’s location in Buffalo. Organizers say they are concerned about Republican frontrunner, retired BPD Detective John Garcia. They are worried he won’t address issues that plagued incumbent Sheriff Tim Howard during his tenure.

Those problems include multiple deaths and alleged abuse at the Erie County Holding Center, misconduct by sheriff’s deputies and an overinflated budget.

Spectrum News 1 has reached out to Garcia for comment.

He’s been endorsed by the Erie County Sheriff’s PBA.

Garcia says he is proud to have law enforcement supporting his candidacy and moving forward, he plans to focus on constantly improving the sheriff’s office and its service to the community.
