BUFFALO, N.Y. — A new medical facility on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus aims to develop treatments for infectious diseases like COVID-19.

The Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center is located at the Hauptman Woodward Medical Research Institute.

Scientists there will study proteins for potential drug treatments.

“With this technology, we make the invisible visible to allow for drug development,” Dr. Edward Snell, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute president and CEO, said. “It’s important for academic research to promote the understanding of health and disease, and I think it’ll attract a lot of economic development within the region.”

The $8.1 million facility includes three microscope rooms and a visitor center.
