BUFFALO, N.Y. — Now that marijuana has been decriminalized in New York State, how can people get involved in the cannabis industry?

That is what Mayor Byron Brown and Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes discussed in an online forum Friday.

Marijuana was decriminalized in April. But in order to start a cannabis business, you need a license. Peoples-Stokes doesn't anticipate licenses being available for another year.

In the meantime, she says there are other avenues people can take if they want to get involved in the industry.

“Quite frankly, there's not a law firm in the city of Buffalo that has attorneys that specialize in the adult use of marijuana. Why? Because that's a job in the industry too. So is consultants, people who help folks fill out applications. So are CPAs, so are people who just want to be in the marketing business, people who want to be in the packaging, design business," Peoples-Stokes said.

Right now, New Yorkers 21 years old and older can possess, obtain and transport up to 3 ounces of cannabis. New Yorkers can also have up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis oil.
