GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — It may not be Amazon that hits the ground on Grand Island, but developers are taking another shot at building something similar. Some people on the Island spoke out against the project during a board meeting Monday night.

  • Developers on Grand Island are taking another shot at building something similar to “Project Olive”
  • Community is concerned because the new project has a bigger footprint than the proposed Amazon warehouse
  • “Project Olive” is still fresh in the minds of Grand Island residents

Grand Islanders were able to sway Amazon to back out of a warehouse project but now they have concerns over a new project in the same spot.

"How is increasing the footprint of this new warehouse by 250,000 square feet, a third more than the Amazon warehouse, not a good reason for further investigation for public and long-term community costs," Michael Rayhill said.

According to public blueprint numbers supplied by developer Michael Huntress, the proposed facility will be in the same area as the once proposed Amazon warehouse. Numbers show that the overall footprint of the facility will be larger than the Amazon proposal.

"How is increasing trailer park spots by almost 50% the same project? How is adding more acres of land not a disturbance including wetland. How does this not call for further investigation? Traffic is also projected to increase in the morning and evening commutes," Rayhill added.

In August, Amazon walked away from what was known as “Project Olive” over costs, and push-back from the community about trucking traffic, noise, and environmental concerns. The new plan calls for a one-story building instead of four. Residents say it is significantly different from the Amazon proposal and should be evaluated by the effect it will have the community.

"These are very different projects with unique impacts and this project has the potential to be extremely consequential for our community and environment," Dave Reilly said.

Huntress did not immediately return a request for comment.
