CLYMER, N.Y. — Despite temperatures in the upper 60s, ski resorts were allowed to open Friday under New York state COVID-19 guidelines. Though some hit the links, since they couldn't hit the slopes.
"Extremely anxious," said Ryan Moyer, Peek'n Peak assistant snow sports operation manager.
Ryan Moyer, 30, of Pennsylvania has been skiing since he was 5, and can't wait to hit the slopes this winter.
"You start watching the weather. As soon as we're ready to open or start making snow, the anticipation goes through the roof," he said.
Last month, Governor Andrew Cuomo set November 6 as the day Peek'n Peak and other resorts across the state could open for the season.
Yet Friday's milder weather saw temperatures reach the upper 60s.
"In our region, it does seem a little crazy right now, with the weather we've been getting," said Moyer.
Golfers took advantage of the above par weather and hit the links at the Peek's upper course.
"It's great. It's a bonus day. We're in short sleeves. It's awesome," said David Randall of Jamestown.
Randall is equally anticipating hitting the slopes, though he doesn't do it that often.
"Well, I ski probably once every two years, so I don't get out a lot but I am looking forward to getting out this year," said Randall.
When skiers do get out, the Peek will continue to operate at 50 percent occupancy inside, under its COVID-19 action plan. Until then, crews continue to maintain the lifts, test the snow-making system, and organize the equipment rentals.
"So, it is going to give us a little bit of a strain inside. Once you get outside, when you're skiing, snowboarding, everyone's already socially distant. Even when you're in line, roughly the length of your skis toe length of the next person’s tails is going to be about six feet," said Moyer.
Moyer said the resort will start making snow when the temperature hits 28 degrees.
