Multiple people were shot at a celebratory gathering in the city of Syracuse Saturday night.

A 17-year-old is in critical condition after being shot in the head, and eight other victims received non-life threatening wounds.

The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. Police say there were called to a report of a stolen car in the area of Wyoming and Marcellus Streets near Performance Park.

Officers arrived to find hundreds of people, many saying that someone was shooting into the crowd.

Officers secured the scene, but did not locate a suspect. The mayor also arrived at the scene, saying gun violence is a problem plaguing cities across the country, but he's confident in the police force.

"This is our city, and we're going to do everything we can to protect it,” said Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. “I have no doubt the chief and his team are going to investigate thoroughly as they usually do, hopefully identify those responsible and hold them accountable, and we'll wake up tomorrow and get back to work."

By the end, 8 of the 9 people shot are expected to recover. The 9th entered the hospital in critical condition.

"To my knowledge no, no city approval was issued for a gathering like this. We wouldn't issue approvals for a gathering of this size. So, we're going to have to look into how it came to be," Walsh said.

Now, police turn their focus to the search for any shooters, during an already tense time in Syracuse. Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick said investigators are looking into the possibility that there were multiple shooters at the scene.

"Our city is a very resilient city. We've taken a lot of licks over our history, and this will certainly be remembered," said Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner. "But, we're trying to figure out who is responsible, so we can hold those individuals accountable."

The police chief says they're still in the very early stages of their investigation, and they're hoping the public can help. If you have any information, you can call police at 315-442-5222.
