Buffalo proves once again it’s the city of good neighbors.

A Lancaster family devastated by a house fire just days before Christmas is now slowly getting back on their feet thanks to the community.

In a matter of moments last Saturday, Peggy Ludwig’s house in Lancaster went up in flames.

“We had to just run through it to get out, it was bad,” she said.

The mother of four was home with her two daughters and pets. They made it out alive but their home was left in ruins in the midst of the holiday season. That prompted the community to step in.

“It is just a tragedy that this would ever happen to anybody but especially before the holiday, they’re our neighbors and my heart just completely broke for them and I wanted to do something to be able to help this family,” said neighbor Stacey Friend.

She took to social media asking for people to give what they can to this family and drop it off at her dance studio, the Elite Dancy Company, in Bowmansville. The response was more than she ever hoped for.

“There are toiletries, there are personal products, there are new clothes, there are coats and hats and shoes and boots and gloves and literally anything you would need is here,” Friend said.

The dance studio quickly filled to the brim with donations showing that Western New York truly lives up to its name.

“I mean Buffalo is called the City of Good Neighbors for a reason, this is why,” said Patricia Tirone, Peggy’s sister.

Ludwig was on hand to see person after person walk through the doors of the dance studio with bags and gifts for her family. She says she can’t say thank you enough to all the generosity. For her, all that matters is that her loved ones are okay.

“We’re all healthy, we’re together and we’ll see another Christmas, the house was a house, just stuff but we’re all together, we’re all happy, our pets made it. I’m good, this is the best Christmas I could have,” Ludwig said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family.
