Five staff and faculty members from the University at Buffalo were detained while in Russia, the university confirmed.

The UB members are back in the United States.

According to a report by Reuters, a Russian court ordered the deportation of the five employees, claiming that they violated the terms of their visas.

Reuters says the five had multiple-entry tourist visas but had given a lecture at a local university.

“University at Buffalo officials worked closely with the U.S. Embassy in Russia to facilitate the disposition of the proceedings related to the five staff and faculty members who were detained while visiting the country,” the university said in a statement released Thursday. “We understand that this matter has been resolved and the group has arrived back in the U.S. We are still gathering information and expect to conduct a full debriefing on the matter in the coming days.”
