A 94-year-old woman is dead after a fire in Niagara Falls Friday night, authorities confirm. It started at 9 p.m. on Ashland Avenue.

The Niagara Falls fire chief tells Spectrum News that there was a lot of fire and smoke on the first floor of the single family home.

His crews found an elderly woman within a few feet of the front door.

He says they brought her out and immediately started CPR but ambulance crews weren't able to revive her.

The chief says the woman lived alone and there were no other injuries.

He's unsure if there were working smoke detectors and says the investigation into what sparked the fire could take a while.
