Airmen in Niagara Falls will soon be working out in a state-of-the-art fitness facility.

The old one will be torn down to make way for the new fitness center and crews broke ground on the state-of-the-art facility Wednesday.

The $11.3 million project will replace their current center which was built in 1955.

It is expected to have special physical therapy rooms for group fitness, a strength room, and a fitness room with cardio machines and strength equipment.

Officials said a new fitness center supports the mission of the Air Force.

“You need to be mentally and physically fit to do the mission we do every day,” said Col. Christopher Witter, mission support group commander for the 914th Air Refueling Wing, based at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. “It is absolutely necessary to strategic goals of our country. Air and fueling is that mission set that bar none is a strategic assets of this country and this fitness center will allow our people to be fit and execute that mission going forward.”

Back in March, people feared the base might lose funding for this project because there was speculation that money for the project may be used to build a wall on the southern border.

They expect to complete the center by fall of 2021.
