The man accused of setting his ex-girlfriend on fire outside of a Tim Hortons in the city of Tonawanda was found on both attempted murder and assault charges.

A jury handed down that verdict Friday afternoon after a nearly 5-hour deliberation. His sentencing will take place on Friday, January 3.

Jonathon White was found guilty on both the attempted murder and assault charges after the incident last December. He doused his ex-girlfriend, Jessica Cameron, with gasoline and set her aflame outside her job at Tim Hortons. Cameron spent months in the hospital and was horribly scarred.

They were together for more than seven years and had three children together before the breakup preceding White's attack.

During his testimony Thursday, he claimed he meant to set himself on fire, not Cameron. Based on that, his attorneys said if the intent is not there, he’s not guilty. However, Cameron testified that White told her he intended to hurt her.

Her attorneys said that, to White, Cameron was not a person, but a possession. They said he deliberately brought the gasoline to Tim Hortons and deliberately asked to meet her in a secluded area so he could hurt her.

They also dispute White’s claim that he tried to light himself on fire and that he “exploded.”

After the verdict came down, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn and City of Tonawanda Police praised Cameron for telling her story.

“You and I can only imagine the pain and the horror that Jessica experienced the day of this crime but to have to relive that pain and horror again and again to make sure that Jonathan White was held accountable was incredible," said City of Tonawanda Chief of Police William Strassburg.

“The biggest individual here who deserves kudos is that young lady," Flynn said.

White's defense team is not giving up.

"I’m disappointed but this is the way the system works and we’ll be filing an appeal the day he’s sentenced on January 3," said defense attorney Joseph Terranova.
