Once complete, Build Promise Hall — a project by St. Luke's Mission of Mercy — will be the newest year-round shelter solely for homeless men in Buffalo.

The project is the longtime vision of co-founder Amy Betros.

"Our thought was that if we build a building where we took care of them every day it would give us an opportunity to find housing for them, get them on the different services that they needed to really concentrate on alleviating the homelessness that we have amongst men in Western New York,” said Betros.

Build Promise Vice President Kathleen Mattar says various health organizations will be on site giving these men access to services they desperately need.

"A lot of times people think they're men, they should be able to fend for themselves but, the truth of the matter is that we all need help sometimes," added Betros.

The shelter will be located at the corner of Miller Avenue and Sycamore Street. The 22,000-square foot, one-story building will have 121 beds, a dining area, showers and a laundry facility. The shelter will welcome homeless men every night on a first come, first served basis.

"Whether or not you're in residence here, the men can come in and shower and use the bathroom, use laundry, get food and clothing, that adds to dignity," said Mattar.

Last week, Buffalo's Common Council approved Saint Luke's plans to move forward with the project, which will cost around $5 million. St. Luke's plans to raise that money with grants and donations instead of government funds.
