A Lockport man has been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run that seriously injured a volunteer fireman.

Matthew Hufnagel, 35, is charged leaving the scene of a serious physical injury accident, disobeying a traffic control device, and disobeying a police officer or flag person.

Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour said Hufnagel contacted investigators through his attorney and agreed to meet for an interview, which led to his arrest.

Voutour sent out a heartfelt letter to the driver on Wednesday. He said the victim was his friend Ron, who was volunteering with the Rapids Fire Company to direct traffic near Tonawanda Creek and Minnick Roads.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday.

The volunteer fireman was directing traffic due to an minor accident. Police say that's when a truck approached the intersection, slowed but did not stop, ran into Ron, and then fled the scene.
