People in Hamburg continue to fight for street signs that would alert drivers to areas where kids on the autism spectrum live.

Community members pushed for the signs at a Board of Trustees meeting Monday, even though the state doesn’t allow them.

The state says signs don’t tell drivers specifically what to look for, so they don’t effectively help kids.

People in Hamburg, however, said other warning signs don’t get the job done, and that drivers need to pay extra attention for kids with autism.

"Children at play is like saying you know there might be a playground in the area,” said Gail Vara. “It doesn't address any specifics and if you want to protect a deaf child or a blind child or handicap person than signage has to be stronger.”

The village's mayor said he's looking into the situation and hopes to know more about installing signs within a couple weeks.
