Last year, Liuba Grechen Shirley, a mother of two, ran unsuccessfully for Congress against Long Island Republican Peter King. But Shirley's campaign fundamentally changed the way people run for office, and opened up a whole new door for working parents.

"Mila and Nicholas were one and three when I launched my campaign and I had them with me every day until 3:30 p.m. when my mother would come home from school and she would take them. But a couple of months into the campaign we realized it really wasn't possible,” says Liuba.  “So we put this request into the federal election commission."

The commission voted unanimously to allow Shirley, and all future candidates, to use campaign money to pay for childcare.

"It changed the way people run for office. The way working parents run for office. Even the way people think about running for office," says Liuba.

Earlier this year, New York State legislature took the same step for working parents, and this week Governor Cuomo signed the bill into law.

"[It’s] inspired by Liuba Grechen Shirley when she ran for Congress and the State Board of Elections promulgated a rule that could be used for running for office, but I wanted to codify it into law,” says Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal.  “It's much harder to change a law than a rule. And extend to people who are currently in office."

In a flurry of other bill signings this past week, Cuomo also signed a number of gun control measures which augment the Safe Act passed in 2013, which made New York one of the strictest gun control states in the nation.

"No bill is ever the last word in any area of law. Now, we took a huge step forward,” says New York State Senator Brian Kavanagh. “To make our gun laws the strongest, but we have more work to do."

This week Cuomo signed bills outlawing 3-D printed guns, a bill establishing new regulations for gun buyback programs and a bill preventing school districts from arming teachers.

The new gun control laws come on the heels of several mass shootings. One in California that claimed three lives, another in Mississippi where two people were killed, and a third in Wisconsin where four people were fatally shot. Over the weekend in Brooklyn, there were multiple injuries when a gunman opened fire at party in Brownsville and where one person was killed.
