More than 37 million travelers are expected to hit the road this Memorial Day Weekend, according to AAA.

Being one of the busiest travel weekends, that also means first responders will see an increase in accidents.

They encourage everyone to perform defensive driving.

Whether you're driving to camp grounds, or maybe just cooking out in the backyard, there's other safety procedures to follow.

"You haven't maybe used your grill yet this year, might be the first time, make sure the propane tanks are filled, that the connections are good, the grill is clean and you're not starting a fire that's going to be a little out of hand, make sure the grill is far enough away from a structure — you don't want it too close to the house or under and overhang that might be flammable or catch fire," said Chris Couell, Erie County deputy fire coordinator.

If you're opening up your pool, make sure any children close by are being watched.

"If you have a pool open, someone should be designated to keep an eye on the children. People start socializing, they have a couple of alcoholic beverages, they're not really paying attention, talking to other people and they get distracted," said Couell.

But it's not just the obvious spots like pools to watch for — Couell says coolers could be a safety hazard as well.

"As the ice melts, they basically become tiny pools. Little children want to reach in, they reach for the juice box or something, if they fall in they might not be able to get back out they might be stuck with feet in the air," said Couell.

If you're heading to a lake and taking out a boat, make sure everyone has a life preserver and be cautious of the water that could still be chilly.

As for the driver of the boat?

"Same as a vehicle, you should not be driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, so if you're driving the boat, then don't drink," he said.
