People in the city of Tonawanda are concerned about truck traffic after several tractor-trailers have hit, and become stuck under, the Young Street bridge.

Despite several signs warning of low height, three trucks have crashed into the bridge within the last month alone.

The city of Tonawanda’s mayor issued an executive order last week to ban trucks from using Young Street indefinitely, but people say more needs to be done.

“You can’t be daydreaming, you can’t be thinking of something else,” said Tonawanda resident Ronald Walker. “You’re responsible for a 50 foot or 53-foot trailer and another 16 feet of tractor, 80,000 pounds going down the road. That’s a lead sled that’s going to hurt somebody if you’re not paying attention.”

The city’s next step is to install flashing lights, hoping drivers will heed the warning.
