Are you in the habit of buckling up in the back seat? You might want to start.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is pushing to require all back seat passengers to wear seat belts. Current law only requires it in front seats.

But in the back, only passengers 16 and younger are required to buckle up.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration more than 37,000 people died in a car crash in 2016. Of those people, 48-percent were not wearing a seat belt.

If passed, Governor Cuomo's new amendment would require all passengers of all ages to wear a seat belt everywhere in a vehicle.

A lot of people Spectrum News asked say they already do.

"When I'm driving with someone else, I'm sure how they're driving so, yes I keep a seat belt on and then i'm not sure what other people are doing on the road. Yeah I always wear a seat belt just for safety," said Syracuse resident Alonzo Zimmerman.

Experts say that buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
