With the area’s first major storm in the forecast  for this weekend, AAA wants to remind drivers to take the necessary precautions before hitting the road during or after the snow flies.

The most important safety tip: Slow down!

It might seem like common sense, but ice and snow reduces tire traction, meaning drivers can’t, and shouldn’t, drive or stop as quickly as is possible on a sunny or dry day.

Secondly, don’t turn and apply the brakes at the same time. To avoid skidding or sliding, brake first to slow down and then initiate a turn while the driver’s foot is off the brake.

If possible, avoid stopping altogether, which could cause the car to lose traction and start the wheels spinning if the car has to start from a complete stop instead of accelerating from a slow roll.

Got stuck? Clear the path in front of the vehicle before attempting to move out of the spot. Keeping a shovel in the vehicle is also a good tip. Push the gas pedal gently – making the wheels spin will dig the vehicle deeper into the snow.

If it’s really nasty outside, stay home. It’s warmer in there anyway.
