The season of giving has come and gone, leaving the Food Bank of Western New York in short supply of donations.

"We had a really great run during November and December getting lots of food donations in but believe it or not, we've pretty much already gone through the food that we've received through food drives during that time period and we're actually going to be out by the end of January," said Catherine Shick, the Food Bank of WNY Public and Community Relations manager.

The Food Bank of Western New York serves Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara counties, partnering with 317 hunger relief agencies to serve 140,000 people any given month. And while the food bank does receive supplies from grants and partners, they rely on the donations from the community to provide a variety of food to clients.

"We're always in need of donations like those shelf stable items such as canned beans, canned fruit and vegetables, whole grain pasta, rice. We always need canned tuna, fish, canned chicken, those protein items, and a lot of people might not realize it but we need things like baby food, baby formula, diapers, even those basic personal care items like toilet paper, toilet paper is a big need for our agencies," Shick said.

In addition to donations, they are also in need of volunteers all year long.

"[We need volunteers] to help make sure the food we do receive is sorted and packed into the boxes that will be shipped to our agencies. There's no shortage of ways people can get involved to help our community members in need. We're always looking for volunteers, we're always looking for people to hold food drives, especially this time of year when food drives significantly drop," Shick said.
