When it's cold out taking off your child’s jacket probably isn’t the first thing on your mind, but experts say it should be.

Taking off your child’s jacket before putting them in a car seat could save their life, especially if you end up in a crash. Experts say even though the buckle might seem secure with the coat on, take a look at just how loose it is once the coat is removed.

“As I buckle the child back in, it’s the same harness that was buckled in with the jacket and you can see how much looser the harness in reality is,” said Child Passenger Safety Program Coordinator, Kinzie Evrard.

Experts are also calling on parents to pass the message along to family and friends.
