AAA is looking to expand on its successful efforts to decrease the number of drunk drivers by turning to another public safety threat: Driving while “intexicated.”

Distracted driving, which can included texting while driving, kills an average of nine people per day and causes about 1,000 injuries, AAA says.

A new campaign features a PSA in which a distracted mother is driving erratically while looking at her phone.

The agency says looking at a device for any amount of time while driving increases the risk of getting into a crash.

"There's a stigma attached to drinking and driving, but people are still using their phones behind the wheel,” said Elizabeth Carey, a spokesperson for AAA of Western and Central New York. “If you look away from the road for just two seconds, you'll double your crash rate. There's a lot of crashes taking places because people look down at their phone and are not paying attention to the road in front of them."

AAA is pushing this message ahead of the upcoming New Year's holiday. It estimates more than 400 deaths and more than 49,000 injuries will happen nationally during the holiday this year.
