Security officials have given the all clear following a series of emailed bomb threats in Western New York and across the country.

At least five locations in downtown Buffalo were evacuated Thursday because of the threats.

Former Homeland Security Special Agent, Dr. Steven MacMartin served the agency for 31 years.

MacMartin said despite the FBI determining it was all a hoax, Thursday's events were beyond concerning.

"There's been bomb threats by email before but there have never been bomb threats like this," said Dr. MacMartin. "One that came in a phishing form and one that demanded a ransom."

Dr. MacMartin said schemes involving different technologies pose a continued challenge for authorities trying to protect the public.

"We have a saying in law enforcement that we only catch the dumb ones," added Dr. McMartin. "That's because the smart ones are still getting away with it. The smart ones are stretching out that rubber-band and when we finally catch up and we snap that rubber-band they start stretching it again."

Dr. MacMartin recommends the public stay vigilant and contact authorities going forward in case a similar situation should happen again.
