At Western New York's largest holiday festival, there's no shortage of frosty-themed family fun.

"There's two major components to the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights,” explained Marty Biniasz, social marketing manager for the Erie County Agricultural Society. “First is our drive-through experience, where you go through basically 100 acres of our fairgrounds perimeter and see these massive LED light sculptures, close to a million lights, then you get out of your car and come into six fully decorated buildings like the North Pole Experience."

Kids can meet and take pictures with Santa, as well as write letters to him and help him with tasks in an escape room.

"There's many activities, a lot of parents bring their kids here for anywhere from two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours,” he said.  “On Sundays only, you can see live reindeer."

To get the magical display ready for the holiday season, the elves got to work back in the summer.

"Believe it or not, we start preparing for the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights almost immediately after the Erie County Fair ends in August,” Biniasz said. “With over a million lights and all the displays, it's a good three-and-a-half months of preparation for the 19-day festival."

The festival runs the next two weekends, Friday through Sunday from 5-9 p.m., at the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg.
