The City of Buffalo is saving millions of dollars with a new firefighter contract.

The eight-year deal with the Buffalo Professional Firefighters Association retroactively goes into effect July 1, 2017 and holds through June 2025.

The projected savings for the city is $32 million from changes to health insurance, sick time policies and light duty.

The largest single item contributing to the savings will come from encouraging employees who are currently on long-term “injured on duty” status and unable to work to retire with a service disability pension.

Firefighters will see raises averaging at 3.3 percent.

Union members will also see their maximum salaries jump from $68,000 to $86,000.
